The People Behind the Champion: Max Verstappen’s Parents

Max Verstappen didn’t just stumble into Formula 1 greatness by accident.

Behind the four-time world champion sits a family story unlike almost any other in motorsport, a story shaped by two extraordinary racing parents whose influence, in very different ways, forged one of the most dominant drivers the sport has ever seen.

Max was born to Jos Verstappen and Sophie Kumpen, a couple who separated in 2008 but who, during their years together, created something remarkable: a child with racing in his very DNA.

Both parents were competitive drivers in their own right, giving Max not just a love for speed but a natural gift for it that was evident almost from the moment he could sit upright.

Jos Verstappen: The Man Who Built a Monster

Jos Verstappen is perhaps the more famous of the two parents, not only because of his own Formula 1 career but because of his deeply controversial role in shaping Max’s character.

Jos competed in F1 from 1994 to 2003, taking part in 107 Grands Prix across a career that saw him race for teams including Benetton, Arrows, and Minardi.

He earned the nickname “Jos the Boss,” though his talent was frequently let down by uncompetitive machinery. Many observers felt he deserved far more than the two podium finishes his career ultimately yielded.

Despite never quite breaking through at the top, Jos was determined that his son would. From the age of four, Max was behind the wheel of a kart.

By seven, he was already competing in championships. Jos believed in what he called tough love — though critics have suggested it went considerably further than that.

The stories from Max’s childhood are striking. On a brutally cold winter day at the karting track, a young Max complained to his father that he couldn’t feel his fingers. Jos’s response was blunt: “I don’t care, drive.”

When Max performed poorly at a race in Italy, Jos became so furious during the 17-hour drive home that he pulled over at a petrol station and ordered his son out of the car, leaving him to call his mother for a ride.

He didn’t speak to Max for a week. On another occasion, during a karting championship where Max was underperforming, Jos dragged him into the pits and physically struck him on the helmet.

Jos was unapologetic about his methods. The goal, in his mind, was singular: produce the best racing driver in the world.

He would regularly tell Max that he would never make it — that he’d end up driving buses or trucks.

Rather than crushing his son, these words lit a fire. As Max himself has reflected, it “always motivated me to show my father that I could do it and that I was fast enough.”

Max has since spoken warmly of his father’s approach, crediting it as the foundation of his champion’s mindset. After claiming his fourth world title, he said he was grateful to have been pushed the way he was.

Still, there’s a quieter, more human cost buried in there, too. Max once admitted that he essentially had no real childhood, adding simply: “Sometimes, I would have liked to play football on Saturdays.”

Sophie Kumpen: The Racing Mother Who Stepped Back

While Jos occupies much of the spotlight in Max’s story, Sophie Kumpen’s contribution is no less significant.

Sophie was a serious racing driver in her own right, having competed in karting at a high level, including events like the Formula A series and the Super A Swift Cup, and taking part in the Karting World Championship on multiple occasions.

The talent Max displays didn’t come from just one side of the family.

In 1996, Sophie stepped away from competitive racing to raise her children with Jos and to support his ongoing F1 career.

It was a considerable personal sacrifice from someone who clearly had a genuine ability behind the wheel.

After her separation from Jos in 2008, she briefly attempted a comeback in 2013, entering the Formido Swift Cup, but the return ended in misfortune — a crash at Zandvoort fractured a vertebra, and she has not raced since.

Together, Jos and Sophie gave Max something no academy or simulator ever could: a racing bloodline and a burning hunger to prove himself. Whatever one makes of the methods involved, the result speaks for itself.
