During the racially tumultuous 1980s, 16-year-old Markenzy Lapointe moved to Miami with his family and lived in a small Liberty City apartment with his mother and four siblings.

He worked various jobs, including driving a cab and working at a restaurant with his mother, all while pursuing his education.

After graduating from Miami Edison Senior High School in 1987, he joined the U.S. Marines as a reservist.

He later earned a Bachelor of Science in finance from Florida State University in 1993, followed by a law degree in 1999. He said:

There was never a defining moment when I decided to become an attorney. Growing up in Haiti, I have always had an appreciation for the role of law in the context of social justice.
