Jordan Lucella Elizabeth Chiles was born to her Black father, Timothy, and Latina mother, Gina Chiles (née Velasquez), on April 15, 2001, in Tualatin, Oregon.
Gina named her after American basketball legend Michael Jordan.
In an interview with KOIN in March 2018, Jordan said that her mom is “literally in love with sports.”
“She felt the inspiration he gave her, and that was such a huge and beautiful thing,” the Olympian told PEOPLE in 2023.
However, Jordan is not the only child born to Gina. The artistic gymnast currently competing in the 2024 Paris Olympics has four siblings: Jade, Jazmon, Tajmen, and Tyrus.
Jordan’s Mother, Gina Chiles, Is A Pastor & An Author
Jordan’s father, Timothy, and mother, Gina, are senior pastors at the Houston campus.
Timothy’s father was a minister, and he grew up ministering alongside his dad before becoming a music minister and eventually licensed.
After Gina married him in 1994, she later joined him in ministry, becoming a pastor herself.
In 2018, Gina wrote a children’s book inspired by her youngest child, titled “Dream Big, Little Chick,” published in 2020.
The story begins with Little Chick, who is filled with curiosity about her future. She experiments with various activities before ultimately becoming a “high-flying gymnast,” setting her sights on the Animal Olympics.
The nickname “Chick” is a family moniker for Chiles, derived from the character Chicken Little.
Jordan’s Support System Gina
When Jordan found herself contemplating leaving gymnastics, she made a life-changing decision.
The young athlete moved to Spring, Texas, to join her teammate Simone Biles at the World Champions Centre, training under coaches Cecile and Laurent Landi.
Gina accompanied her daughter, leaving her husband and their four older children back home in Washington.
The mother of five admitted that being away from her family for extended periods was challenging, but the sacrifice was essential for Jordan’s athletic development.
“She never asks for anything regarding gymnastics,” Gina told Clark County Today in July 2021.
She added, “We try not to go longer than three weeks apart,” about the toll of her separation from Timothy.
Serving Time in Prison
Gina Chiles served a federal prison sentence after being accused of embezzlement. KOIN reported in May 2022 that she was released from prison four months early.
Gina Chiles began serving her sentence in August 2021 after being accused of embezzling more than $1 million.
Her sentence was delayed by a month so she could watch her daughter compete in the Tokyo Olympics.
As confirmed by court documents obtained by Heavy, she was initially sentenced to one year and one day in federal prison.
