At the time of Janie Lynn Ridd’s arrest by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) on December 20, 2019, she was reportedly single and was co-parenting a child with her friend, Rachel.
Netflix documentary series ”Worst Roommate Ever” Season 2, episode 1, exposes real crimes committed by Janie Lynn Ridd, who intentionally bought antibiotic-resistant bacteria Vancomycin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (VRSA) from the Dark Web vendor to unalive her friend, Rachel.
Janie Lynn Ridd was a former employee of the job assistance center for Native Americans in West Valley City, Utah.
After Rachel moved in with Janie Ridd in 1995, they became roommates and had been best friends for nearly 25 years.
Rachel’s health started to deteriorate after 2010. She had seven back surgeries for a herniated disc between 2015 and 2018.
Later on, Rachel found out she was pregnant, and after giving birth to her son, Ryder, her health got even worse, consequently, she quit her job where she previously worked as a paramedic for six years.
Rachel and Janie were co-parenting Ryder. Rachel took out a $500,000 insurance policy in her name for her son, Ryder, and named Janie as her son’s legal guardian.
Ridd had a life insurance policy on herself and her roommate, with each being the other’s beneficiary.
But Rachel’s change of will so that her niece would become the legal custodian of her son upended Janie.
Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Involvement In Janie Lynn Ridd’s Attempt To M*rder Case
Janie Lynn Ridd started to use anxiety relief drugs and got to more powerful ones around March 2019 to put Rachel to sleep.
In June 2019, Rachel had two separate episodes of dangerously low blood sugar levels that hospitalized her even though she was not diabetic and was not taking insulin.
Rachel had another surgery due to the inexplicable development of three golf-ball-sized infections on the wound in October 2019.
One of the infections was tested and determined to contain E. coli, a type of bacteria. Rachel’s surgeon disclosed that the E. coli infection did not result from surgery but must have been injected.
Federal investigators started to doubt after Janie flagged a shipment of Vancomycin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (VRSA), in Rachel’s name who was immunocompromised at the time.
In 2019, FBI agents deliberately delivered a package to Ridd’s mailbox containing Petri dishes containing fake VRSA concealed in a plastic Folgers Coffee container.
While negotiating with a dark web vendor, Ridd told the vendor that she was a biology teacher and needed VRSA cultures for a science experiment at the school.
During the investigation, Ridd told the investigator agent that she had purchased expensive coffee from an online company for $300.
Authorities searched Ridd’s account on the dark web marketplace and found an insulin purchase in September 2019.
Subsequently, investigators served a search warrant at Ridd’s home and located hypodermic needles that were not owned by Rachel, along with a copy of a living will.
After the FBI thoroughly investigated the case, Janie was arrested on December 20, 2019. At the time of her arrest, she was 50 years old.
Reportedly, on August 25, 2020, Janie Lynn pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 20 years of prison along with an order to pay $1,000 plus interest in restitution.
