In a candid interview with NPR, the 25-year-old daughter of renowned actors Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman revealed the challenges she faced growing up with dyslexia.

It was deeply difficult,” she admitted, recounting how she was kicked out of school as a child for her inability to read.

Hawke had to attend a special school for kids with learning disabilities, where it took her a long time to finally learn how to read, an ability she still finds herself limited in today.

Despite the obstacles, Hawke views her dyslexia as “one of the great blessings” of her life.

There’s something about having had a limitation in regards to my ability to produce and take in stories that made me even more determined to love them and understand them and grow in them,” she explained.
